One ton of cocaine seized in Argentina
Dec 20, 2011, 17:56 GMT
Buenos Aires - Argentine authorities on Tuesday seized one ton of cocaine in Buenos Aires province, adjacent to the capital.
Three men were arrested in the operation, which was named 'White Christmas' and was billed as the largest of its kind in Argentina over the past 15 years.
The drugs were being transported to Buenos Aires from the northern Argentine province of Jujuy in a truck that was stopped in Lima, about 100 kilometres away from the capital.
The truck, which was apparently carrying paper, was also found to be holding the cocaine, with a street value of up to 35 million dollars, according to Buenos Aires province Justice Minister Ricardo Casal.
Casal said the drugs had mostly come in from Bolivia and to a lesser extent Peru.
Dealers had aimed to sell them in Buenos Aires, but also on the Argentine coast and in neighbouring Uruguay in the coming months, the summer holiday season in the area.
