Dec 21, 2011, 17:54 GMT
Rio de Janeiro - More than 11.4 million Brazilians currently live in 'favelas,' as the country's slums are known, the public Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said Wednesday.
Its findings are based on 2010 census data.
Almost half of the 'favelados,' around 5.6 million people, live in the heavily industrialized South-Eastern region, which holds Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, among other cities. The report said 23.2 per cent of the country's slum dwellers live in the state of Sao Paulo, and 19.1 per cent live in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
According to the latest Brazilian census, a huge majority of Brazil's favelas are in the metropolitan areas of cities like Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belem, Salvador and Recife.
Brazil has a total population of 190.7 million.
