EU commission awards Haiti extra aid, warns of "significant" needs
Dec 23, 2011, 13:15 GMT
Brussels - Haiti is still facing 'significant humanitarian needs,' the European Union's executive warned on Friday as it announced the allocation of another 3 million euros (4 million dollars) in aid to the country.
Haitians are preparing to mark in January the two-year anniversary of the earthquake that killed more than 220,000 and displaced between 1.3-1.6 million. A cholera epidemic followed, killing more than 6,600 Haitians in the last year and making an estimated 475,000 sick.
'There remain significant humanitarian needs that the Haitian government cannot handle alone,' EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva said, pointing to enduring homelessness and the risk of a fresh cholera outbreak with the next rainy season in April.
'So long as Haitians need us, we'll be there,' she said.
The new allocation brings to 38.5 million euros the amount of humanitarian aid the European Commission has earmarked for Haiti this year. For 2012, it is planning to give 15.25 million euros.
