Parliamentary elections underway in Jamaica; close race expected
Dec 29, 2011, 14:26 GMT
Kingston/Sao Paolo - A parliamentary election began Thursday in Jamaica, where a close race was expected between the ruling party of Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the opposition People's National Party, led by former premier Portia Simpson Miller.
Initial results are expected on Friday. Some 1.6 million citizens of the Caribbean island are eligible to vote in the election.
A key election issue is Jamaica's high national debt, which lies at around 130 per cent of gross domestic product.
