Agenda of pope's visit to Cuba and Mexico announced
Jan 2, 2012, 12:41 GMT
Vatican City - A planned visit by Pope Benedict XVI to Cuba and Mexico has been set for the end of March, the Vatican confirmed Monday.
According to the itinerary, Benedict will visit Mexico from March 23-26, and will only stop in the city of Leon, to hold a mass and meet representatives of the country's 91 dioceses.
He will then visit Cuba until March 28, travelling to the cities of Santiago de Cuba and Havana.
According to the regional bishops' conferences, the prelate is to meet with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Cuban President Raul Castro during the visit.
The rough outlines of the trip were announced last month.
Benedict visited Brazil in 2007, but has not yet travelled to the Spanish-speaking parts of Latin America. Doctors advised him against a trip to Mexico City in 2009 because of its high altitude.
The last papal visit to Cuba was by Benedict's predecessor, John Paul II, in 1998.
