Argentine president doing well after cancer surgery
Jan 4, 2012, 18:02 GMT
Buenos Aires - Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was recovering well Wednesday, after undergoing surgery for thyroid cancer.
'No problems or complications' arose during the three-and-a-half-hour operation at the Hospital Austral, in the Buenos Aires suburb of Pilar, said government Spokesman Alfredo Scoccimarro.
Scoccimarro said Fernandez de Kirchner, 58, would remain in hospital for three days. She has taken leave from her official duties until January 24, with Vice President Amado Boudou filling in.
According to plan, Fernandez de Kirchner's thyroid gland was fully removed. She was diagnosed with cancer in that organ on December 22, but doctors have stressed that the illness was in its early stages, with no metastasis, and that she has very good chances of making a full recovery.
