Jan 23, 2012, 16:38 GMT
Sao Paulo - Brazilian police evicted illegal occupants in a major raid in Sao Jose dos Campos, near Sao Paulo, amid clashes that left three people injured and led to about 30 arrests.
The site, known as 'Pinheirinho,' had been illegally occupied since 2004, and settlers had built homes there.
Police deployed 2,000 men, 40 dogs and 100 horses as well as helicopters and armoured vehicles in Sunday's raid in Sao Jose dos Campos, 90 kilometres away from Brazilian economic powerhouse Sao Paulo.
Officers used tear gas and rubber bullets. According to a preliminary report on the incident Monday, nine cars were set ablaze. Hundreds of residents spent the night in emergency accommodation, according to Brazilian media reports.
The occupied site belonged to a firm that went bankrupt and whose assets are to serve to pay creditors.
