Strong quake shakes southern Chile, no damage reported
Jan 23, 2012, 20:29 GMT
Santiago - A quake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale shook southern Chile Monday, although there were no immediate reports of damage.
The quake's epicentre was 50 kilometres north of Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake happened close to 30 kilometres underground, the USGS said.
The Chilean Navy stressed that there was no risk of a tsunami to follow the quake.
Concepcion, about 500 kilometres south of Santiago, was among the worst-hit places in the massive 8.8 quake and subsequent tsunami that devastated much of Chile on February 27, 2010.
