Deaths feared as two buildings collapse in Brazil
Jan 26, 2012, 6:03 GMT
Rio de Janeiro - Two buildings collapsed in the centre of Rio de Janeiro late Wednesday, injuring at least four people, Mayor Eduardo Paes said.
Civil defence authorities said the collapse left 11 people dead and injured while the Brazilian news agency Agencia do Estado said at least two people were killed.
The collapse involved one 10-storey and one 20-storey building, Paes said.
Neighbouring buildings were damaged in the collapse, including the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro.
Nearby cars were buried under rubble.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately known, but some witnesses said there was an explosion before the buildings collapsed and a strong smell of gas.
