Six killed as three buildings collapse in Rio de Janeiro
Jan 27, 2012, 13:47 GMT
Rio de Janeiro - The death toll climbed to six from the collapse of three buildings in the centre of Rio de Janeiro, GloboNews TV reported online Friday, after more bodies were recovered overnight.
Six injured people were in hospital, and according to media reports an estimated 20 people were still missing.
The three adjacent office buildings - one of them 20 storeys - collapsed at about 2230 GMT Wednesday, in the heart of the city near Cinelandia Square, one of Rio's main areas and home to monuments such as the Municipal Theatre and the National Museum of Fine Arts.
At the time of the collapse, most of the occupants had already left work. The other buildings had 10 and four storeys.
The accident renewed concerns about safety in Rio de Janeiro, which is to host the Football World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately clear and investigators were focusing on possible structural defects in the buildings.
