Cuban dissident group reports 631 arrests in January
Feb 9, 2012, 23:59 GMT
Havana - The Cuban regime made brief arrests of 631 opponents in January, a dissident group said Thursday in Havana.
The independent Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation said that the government was using temporary detentions to disrupt events organized by the opposition.
Elizardo Sanchez, chief of the independent Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation, said that three political prisoners were released during the month. Serving prison terms, the three had suffered inhumane conditions during their incarcerations, he said.
The Cuban government denies holding political prisoners and says that Cuban dissidents are tools of the United States.
