The attack not only killed two South Korean marines and injured 18 other people, but also destroyed dozens of houses on the island, which is located near the disputed maritime border. The shells also destroyed 70 per cent of the island‘s forests and fields, the disaster control office at Incheon said. Some 400 of the island‘s 1,700 residents were evacuated to the mainland.
