Zoo otter makes 10-kilometre swim to freedom
Jun 21, 2006, 11:28 GMT
Wellington - The New Zealand navy was called in Wednesday to search for an otter reported to have swum 10 kilometres across Auckland harbour after escaping from the city's zoo.
'While otters are good swimmers, we're absolutely stunned at the distance she has travelled,' said Auckland Zoo curator Maria Finnigan after the 4-year-old female called Jin was seen near the navy depot at Devonport on the other side of the harbour.
Jin has been on the run since escaping from her enclosure with two other otters, who had since been found, on June 13 and was 'clearly in a state of panic, which is why she is remaining on the move,' Finnigan said.
Navy boats combed the sea off Devonport while local residents checked their backyards and garages without success.
