Malaysian police bust horse-betting ring, detain 9 men
Jan 23, 2007, 2:00 GMT
Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police have detained nine men, including two Singaporean nationals, suspected of running an illegal horse-betting syndicate with stakes of up to 600,000 ringgit (162,162 dollars) per week, news reports said Tuesday.
The suspects, aged between 29 and 51, were arrested when police made a surprise raid at a home in the southern Johor state late Sunday.
The men were allegedly accepting online bets from punters when police stormed the premises, said Nor Hashim Mohamad, deputy criminal investigations chief.
'We believe the syndicate might have links with syndicates in neighbouring countries,' Nor Hashim was quoted as saying by the Star daily. 'Based on the items seized, we believe this syndicate could have been one of the biggest syndicates in the state.'
Police also seized betting slips, eight laptops and 22 mobile phones in the raid, he said.
Authorities believe the syndicate chief has yet to be caught, adding that the nine suspects would be remanded for questioning.
