Bangkok police mobilize pet German shepherds, labradors
Jan 27, 2007, 3:05 GMT
Bangkok - Bangkok police on Saturday launched bomb detection training courses for 100 non-commissioned German shepherds and labradors in a bid to tighten security in the capital, media reports said.
Special Operations Division Commander Major General Vimon Pao-in said it was necessary to train the pet pooches since the police force lacked sufficient budget to purchase its own sniffer dogs, The Nation newspaper reported.
Bangkok was rocked by eight explosions on New Year's Eve that killed three people and injured another 42. Police have yet to charge anyone for the terrorist act, suspected to have been politically motivated.
But with Bangkok's pampered pet German shepherds and labradors now receiving explosives-detection training, denizens of the capital need not fear.
'The two breeds have special skills, so we want to ask owners to bring their pets to help with the official tasks,' Vimon said.
'Your dogs can be more than pets,' was his recruitment slogan.
