Malaysian couple face separation on alleged sex-change charges
Mar 13, 2007, 10:07 GMT
Kuala Lumpur - An Islamic marriage court may force a Malaysian couple to separate if the husband is found to have undergone a sex-change operation, reports said Tuesday.
Mohamad Sofian, 40, legally married Zaiton Aziz in 2002 and the duo also underwent a religious Muslim wedding solemnisation.
However, several months later, religious officials from the southern Malacca state refused to register the marriage after they claimed that the groom was in fact formerly a woman, the New Straits Times daily said.
The couple, who arrived at the court Monday holding hands, was charged under the state Islamic family enactment which forbids same-sex marriages.
If found guilty their marriage will be annulled and they will be forced to separate.
