Drunk driving father sleeps as car with toddler towed away
Mar 27, 2007, 7:03 GMT
Wellington - A drunk driver who fell asleep on the ground while filling his car with petrol, as his two-year-old daughter played on the back seat, had one of the highest blood-alcohol readings ever recorded in New Zealand, police said on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old labourer took 40 minutes to wake up and face a breath test showing he had 1,729 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, more than four times the legal limit.
The child's mother did not know he had taken their daughter for a drive in Rotorua early Sunday morning after he had been drinking all through the night.
Already disqualified from driving, the unnamed man admitted being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle and was remanded in custody for sentence on April 18.
