Apr 7, 2007, 23:19 GMT
Tokyo - Polls opened nationwide Sunday for regional and local elections that are seen as the first test Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The regional voting precedes summer elections for the upper chamber of the Diet, Japan's parliament.
Sunday's most-watched races are for the governorships of 13 of Japan's 47 prefectures, including Tokyo.
Mayors and local councils are up for election in most major cities and regions. A second round of regional elections are scheduled for April 22.
