Malaysian police bust multi-million-dollar gambling ring
May 14, 2007, 6:19 GMT
Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police have detained six women believed to have been running an illegal gambling den with bets amounting to more than 8 million ringgit (2.3 million dollars) a month, reports said Monday.
The suspects, aged between 20 and 40, were arrested when police raided a triple-storey house in the capital Kuala Lumpur late Saturday, said city criminal investigations chief Ahmad Ibrahim.
'Police confiscated five laptops and five fax machines believed to be used by the syndicate. The house was used as a centre to calculate the bets,' Ahmad was quoted as saying by the official Bernama agency.
Police were forced to break down the door of the house after the suspects refused to open the doors, he said.
'Initial investigation shows that each betting could fetch as much as 500,000 ringgit (142,860 dollars) and at least eight bettings were held monthly,' said Ahmad.
The women, all of whom are locals, have been placed under remand and will be charged for illegal gambling. If found guilty, they stand to face a fine of 200,000 ringgit (57,142 dollars) and a five-year jail term.
