EU condemns detention of Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi
May 25, 2007, 18:55 GMT
Berlin - The European Union's German presidency 'deeply condemned' Friday the one-year extension of the house arrest of Myanmar opposition leader and Nobel Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
A statement issued in Berlin said the presidency deplored the fact that all international appeals, including one by the EU on Thursday, had 'once more gone unheard.'
'The government's decision demonstrates persistent unwillingness to engage all political and ethnic forces of the country in a genuine dialogue with a view to bringing about true national reconciliation and the establishment of democracy,' the statement added.
