Hanoi - A court in Vietnam has sentenced a Taiwanese man to 10 years in prison for smuggling diamonds into the communist country, a court official said Wednesday.
Chen Hsin Hsiung, 45, was sentenced by the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday for smuggling more than 15,000 diamonds into Vietnam, according to the chief judge.
'He pleaded guilty at the trial,' said chief judge Nguyen Duc Sau.
Chen was arrested at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City in September 2004 with 2,510 diamonds and 12,900 dollars in his carry-on luggage after disembarking a flight from Taiwan.
He later confessed to Vietnamese police that he had brought 15,182 diamonds into Vietnam without declaring them to customs.
