New Zealand police find body likely to be dumped tot's mom (1st Lead)
Sep 19, 2007, 5:28 GMT
Wellington - New Zealand police said Thursday that they had found the body of an Asian woman suspected of being the mother of a 3-year-old girl abandoned by her father at an Australian rail station last week.
The body, yet to be formally identified, was found in the boot of a car that was parked outside the suburban Auckland home of the child Qian Xun Xue, known as Pumpkin.
Australian police have said the girl's father, Nai Yin Xue, 54, flew to the United States Saturday after leaving his daughter at a Melbourne train station. The pair had flown to Australia from Auckland two days earlier.
The discovery of the child launched a search for Pumpkin's mother, An An Xue, 28, who police said had not left New Zealand although her car was found parked at Auckland International Airport.
Detective Simon Scott said at a news conference that a post-mortem would be carried out on the body Thursday.
He said police had not been able to check the car left outside the family's home in Mount Roskill until they obtained a formal search warrant.
Scott said Interpol had been asked to help find Xue.
