Norwegian trade union leader backs call to "wear red"

Oslo/Stockholm - The head of the Norwegian trade union confederation Thursday said he would take part in a global call to 'wear red' on Friday in support of the Myanmar opposition.
'We are concerned over the military regime's actions,' union leader Roar Flathen said in a statement on the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Union's web site, adding that the 'military regime of Burma is one of the most undemocratic and brutal in the world.'
Flathen also noted that unions are not allowed in Myanmar.
In Sweden, several members of parliament said they planned to host an informal gathering Friday in the Swedish parliament in support of the democratic opposition.
A chain of text messages as well as calls on blogs have spread the message to wear red on Friday symbolizing the saffron-coloured robes worn by Buddhist monks who in recent days have been targeted by the military rulers of Myanmar.
The Norwegian capital Oslo is also base for the opposition radio station Democratic Voice of Burma that broadcasts to Myanmar.
