Fourteen crew missing after cargo ship sinks in Philippines
Oct 2, 2007, 11:30 GMT
Manila - Fourteen crew members are missing after a cargo ship carrying cement sank in stormy seas on the weekend in the western Philippines, the coast guard said Tuesday.
Lieutenant Armand Balilo said search and rescue operations were underway for the missing crewmen of the M/V Via, which sank off Palawan island, 600 kilometres south-west of Manila.
Balilo said the coast guard found out about the ship's sinking when fishermen rescued four crew members on Sunday.
The ill-fated ship was to deliver cement to Brooks Point in Palawan and left the port in central Cebu province on September 26. It was expected to arrive there two days later, but did not show up.
A tropical storm was battering the Philippines last week, killing 13 people. Another storm has been spotted north of the country, causing more rain.
