US diplomat to meet with Myanmar junta officials
Oct 4, 2007, 22:08 GMT
Washington - The top US diplomat in Myanmar has agreed to meet Friday with senior leaders of the military regime following the violent crackdown last week on democratic activists, the US State Department confirmed.
Shari Villarosa, head of the US mission in Myanmar, will travel from Yangon to Naypyidaw for the talks, US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.
The regime launched a violent response to end weeks of protests throughout the country, with an official death toll of 10. But activists and observers belive the number of dead could be much higher.
