Oct 26, 2007, 0:07 GMT
Singapore - A businessman who pocketed 700,000 Singapore dollars (520,000 US dollars) in donations meant for five mosques was jailed for 44 months, news reports said Friday.
Mustaffa Mazlan Selamat, 49, failed to keep accounting and other records as a director of a company dealing in tele-donations between January 1, 2003 and December 31, 2004, The Straits Times said.
During the fundraising drive, Mustaffa filched the money intended for the Abdul Hamid Kampong Pasiran Mosque.
A district court was told that an official from the Islamic Religious Council lodged a police report when Mustafa failed to hand over the donations.
He has made partial restitution of 191,381 Singapore dollars (129,311 US dollars).
