Former prisoner buys his old cell
Oct 31, 2007, 4:06 GMT
Sydney - Reformed convict Graeme Alford is seeking the ultimate trophy property: the Melbourne prison cell where he spent seven years for armed robbery in the 1970s.
Alford expected to sign the sale contract for cell 43 in what was Pentridge Prison's D Division. Pentridge is being redeveloped into an upmarket residential and commercial complex, and Alford now has the money to buy his old digs.
Gambling was the downfall of the former barrister. He was first jailed for stealing money from clients to pay off bookmakers and incarcerated a second time for robbing a bank.
He went straight in 1980 and has built a successful career as an author and motivational speaker.
Alford's cell, in the same section where in 1967 Ronald Ryan became the last man hanged in Australia, is in a part of Pentridge that is to be redeveloped into a cellar for top-shelf wines.
