Police detective cleared of molesting two girls
Dec 29, 2007, 1:03 GMT
Singapore - A detective charged with molesting two teenagers has been freed after a Singapore judge ruled that the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses were 'not credible,' news reports said Saturday.
Veteran officer R Govindharajoo, 40, had also been under suspension since March 2. A police spokesman told The Straits Times that the suspension will be reviewed.
Govindharaloo, with the Serious and Sexual Crimes Branch, was investigating an allegation by a 16-year-old girl in January who claimed she had been raped, and a 14-year-old said she was a witness.
After investigations determined the older girl had consensual sex, the two students then accused Govindharajoo of molesting them.
Subhas Anandan, Govindarajoo's lawyer, told a Singapore court on Friday that the older girl had never mentioned to her counsellor that she had been molested, while the younger one had lied several times in the past, The Straits Times said.
Judge Jasvender Kaur said the prosecution had not proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
