Bogus Malaysian shaman accused of preying on women for money, sex

Kuala Lumpur - Two Malaysian women have lodged a police report against a self-proclaimed shaman and his female accomplice for allegedly duping them of thousands of ringgit and sexual favours in return for healing them of illnesses and bad luck, reports said Monday. The two women, who described the man as 'good-looking' and in his 30s, said they sought his help for spiritual healing and to obtain good fortune and harmony for businesses and marriages. One of the victims, a 32-year old businesswoman, who only wanted to be identified as Madam Lai, said that she was introduced to the bogus shaman by a relative to seek treatment to ward off evil spirits and bad luck in her home, the New Straits Times daily said. After giving the man 8,000 ringgit (2,353 dollars), Lai was subjected to a series of 'healing treatments' comprising of acupuncture and consumption of a drink, purportedly to be holy water, which made her dazed, the report said. She alleged that the man took advantage of her sexually during those times. Another victim, identified only as Madam Ting, 42, claimed she lost 9,000 ringgit (2,647 dollars) to the man after being hypnotized during one of his 'healing sessions.' Both women, together with four other unnamed victims, have lodged a police report against the man and his female accomplice. In spite of numerous reports of sexual assaults and fraud by bogus shamans, many Malaysians still look to the supernatural healing powers of these spiritual mediums to cure diseases, cast out evil spirits or ward off ill fortune. © 2008 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
