Feb 24, 2008, 15:16 GMT
Jakarta - An undersea earthquake registering 6.5 on the Richter scale struck the Indonesian province of Bengkulu in southwestern of Sumatra late Sunday but there were no immedtae reports of injury or damage, the Indonesian seismologist agency said.
The quake struck at 2021 (1321 GMT) and was centred in the Indian Ocean, 151 kilometres north-west of Mukomuko district town on Bengkulu, Indonesia's National Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.
It occured 57 kilometres beneath the seabed, but the announcement did not say if the quake formed a tsunami threat.
On September 12, Bengkulu province was devastated by a powerful 8.4-magnitude earthquake, killing more than 20 people. It has been followed by more than 50 aftershocks and various tsunami warnings.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation, sits atop the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
