Polish premier Tusk: Of course I'll meet the Dalai Lama

Mar 19, 2008, 13:51 GMT

Warsaw - Polish Premier Donald Tusk said Wednesday he would be willing to meet Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, if Poland's parliament invited him to visit the country.

'Yes, of course,' Tusk told the Polish agency PAP about whether he would receive the Dalai Lama, noting that in the past he had taken every opportunity to meet the Tibetan spiritual leader when the occasion arose, because it was an honour to do so.

Tusk also pointed out that he had become the first head of a government to announce his plans not to attend the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics next summer.

His remarks came as meanwhile the chancellory office of President Lech Kaczynski also signalled a readiness to receive the Dalai Lama.

On Tuesday, the speaker of the Senate of the parliament, Bogdan Borusewicz, confirmed that he was considering issuing an invitation to the Dalai Lama to visit Poland.
