Philippine leader wishes speedy recovery for cancer-stricken Aquino
Mar 25, 2008, 6:20 GMT
Manila - Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Tuesday wished former leader Corazon Aquino, who is leading calls for her resignation, a speedy recovery after being diagnosed with colon cancer.
Arroyo hailed Aquino, 74, for leading the country into a peaceful transition to democracy following the ouster of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos in a non-violent mass uprising in February 1986.
'We, the Filipino people, feel sad for the sickness of former president Aquino,' Arroyo said. 'Let us pray for her speedy recovery and for strength for her family.'
Aquino, an icon of Philippine democracy, said Arroyo has already lost her moral authority to govern the country amid allegations of corruption and electoral fraud.
Aquino is calling for the immediate resignation of Arroyo.
On Monday, Aquino's children said their mother was diagnosed with colon cancer and will undergo chemotherapy.
Aquino's late husband, former senator Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino Jr, was assassinated in August 1983 after returning to the Philippines from exile in Boston, United States. His death galvanized the opposition against Marcos.
