It is unfortunate the U.S. has lost credibility once again by, one on hand, rightly condemning & imposing sanctions over Burma's crackdown on Buddhist monks protesting, but on the other hand, doing barely anything regarding China's similar crackdown on Tibetan monks. No sanctions or call for sanctions, no absolute condemnation. Only a phone-call 'urging' talks, not even a call for restraint. Money Talks.
Bush is a coward. His inaction show his administration's double standard when it comes to China's human right abuse.
Everything that is happening is for a reason... Finally Tibet gets the attention that it cries for in a long time. Respect their battles w/ China.
Oversea Tibetans are pushing all there strength to force government talk with exile leaders. No doubt about that, they did what they could do best.
That may be best chance to talk, since lama knows the status in tibet is slidely silent than CNN guys expectation.
The fact is if leader in exile missed this chance, he may miss it forever.
what does it feel like to be completely ignorant of world politics?
The U.S. should do a lot more to support the Tibetans. The mystic Shangri-la until 1950's was the last paradise in the world. It was miserably destroyed by the Chinese Communists in 1950's. It's now literally in the medieval darkness.
The U.S. Congress should give more financial supports to Dalai Lama. Remember that Dalai Lama and his followers have been working for us
since 1950's. They are fierce and brave fighters for freedom.
They have military experience as well (having received training from the CIA since 1950's and even had a military training camp in Colorado).
We should never abandon a friend who worked for us so diligently.
Chinese Olympic genocide medals dripping with Tibet's blood. Chinese Communist party has the worst human right abuse in world history and we are going to pretend that this is just a difference in politics?
Forget about the UN since China is one of it.
We should build another multinational coalition force led by USA to occupy Tibet as we did for Iraq people.
God Bless America. And God Bless our State Department. We have too many negative thinkers writing comments here, I fear. Our wonderful administration can, in the strongest language, issue a reprimand to the Chinese government. If that falls on deaf ears, then an official chiding can follow. And if that doesn't get the results the American people are looking for, we can exert our muscle and issue an official admonishment 'from the highest level.' (A scolding would be rude, and we can't have that.)
I guess when Bush urged Hu to talk to Dalair Lama, Hu simply urged him to talk to Bin Laden as a reply. Then there was silence on the other end of the line.
Why is it not acceptable for Tibetans to not have the freedom of speech and religion, while it is acceptable for Iraqis not have the freedom of being alive?
And what can US do to China? Sanction? Big joke! US is the one in debt.
I agree with Jim. A very good idea.
But this time don't send our own kids to Tibet.
There are enough Tibetans who are willing to sacrifice their lives for Dalai Lama and Free Tibet. The CIA can give them military trainings as they did in 1950's and 1960's. Dalai Lama worked for the CIA for long time. He will agree to collaborate again if we give him more financial support.

Some leave comments as if they know anything about Tibet and China. The fact is, those comments are based on nothing but bias. Americans are so gullible.
I am doing my part and I urge others to do the same. While I cannot completely avoid buying imported Chinese goods--to hurt them in their pocketbook, something they understand--I can try to avoid buying such good as much as possible by reading labels. But my main response to the Chinese is to not turn on my TV to watch the Olympics there this year, and to urge others to do the same. And to let the network sponsoring the Olympics and their sponsors that I am doing so. It won't punish our athletes: they'll still win any medals they are due.
I've had it with these people. First there was poisoning many of our pet cats and dogs, and then tainted products for humans. Then the mass roundup of cats and the phony cleanup of the city and bogus air cleaning act for the Olympics. I listened to an interview with the ambassador from China this afternoon on NPR, and that BS professional never would answer a direct question, repeated three times (!) as to whether the Tibetans had any legitimate complaints. He just talked about something else each time.
I am a geezer and have seen a lot in my time. Don't ever let the Chinese get ahead of us militarily. Spend what it takes to stay ahead of them in deliverable payloads, is my advice to the younger generations. It is a mistake to ever, ever trust these lying you-know-whats, and putin too. Each of them only respects force, and individuals and life itself counts for nothing. Barbarians. Con men in suits.
lots of love for the monks. do you guys ever know
what those high position monks and their god-king practiced in their religion? gang-rape young girls, murder and torture.
tibet has a dark history. i never like the theocracy.
tibetan got the worst even in that kind.
Bush just wants one more big taxpayer funded vacation before he takes his place in the history books as a huge worldwide disaster.
He has caused more human misery and unnecessary deaths of innocent people than all the Islamic fundamentalist terrorists of the last fifty years put together.
FREE TIBET!
Rick Lowman,
You are such a coward. So the only thing you are going to do is to turn off your TV, which may be made in China? Do you think a silent TV can bring freedom to Tibetans? You must be kidding me.
The U.S. should show the leadership. We at the very least should re-open the military training camp for the Dalai Lama's resistance fighters at Camp Hale near Leadville, Colorado.
We should ask Japanese to financially support the Free Tibet operation. If the Japanese refuse, tell them we are going to close the military bases at Okinawa and give Okinawa to the Chinese Commies. Dalai Lama loves Japanese people. He endorsed a Japanese spiritual movement, Aum Shinrikyo, in 1980's-1990's until the crackdown later on.
We should ask Germany for some substantial support from Europe. Germans had deep connections with Tibet in 1930's and 1940's. Dalai Lama's tutor in 1940's was Heinrich Harrer, a member of the Schutzstaffel. These people are closely linked together. We can form a huge coalition force for sure to change Tibet back to a Shangri-La.

8:24 PM The West has always been anti China in the last 300 years. That is nothing new. No matter what China does, right or wrong, the West will complain, bitch and moan and vilify China.
Columbus killed almost the entire indian population in many parts of america but his action is hailed as a hero in the West.
US and UK killed over 100,000 Iraqis for oil and they called it just cause.
Millions of vietnamese were killed in vietnam war due to US's imperialistic policy, US would only say oops....
Western media, give us a break. You have no moral authority in critisizing others and should start looking at your own human rights records.
My suggestion to the West - stay home during Olympics and watch the Chinese, Russians as well as other non-western countries play and nobody would care about that.
Historical statement or personal prejudice? Give more facts of Tibet in the last 100 years.-- 'The mystic Shangri-la until 1950's was the last paradise in the world. It was miserably destroyed by the Chinese Communists in 1950's. It's now literally in the medieval darkness.
Do you have a plan to occupy the rest of the world and whomever does not agree with us? -- 'The U.S. Congress should give more financial supports to Dalai Lama. Remember that Dalai Lama and his followers have been working for us
since 1950's. They are fierce and brave fighters for freedom.
They have military experience as well (having received training from the CIA since 1950's and even had a military training camp in Colorado).

Speechless!
