Taiwan's president-elect receives election certificate

Taipei - Taiwan president-elect Ma Ying-jeou received his election certificate Monday and vowed to improve Taiwan's economy after he is inaugurated. The Central Election Commission presented election certificates to Ma Ying-jeou and vice president-elect Vincent Siew, who won a landslide victory in the March 22 election for the opposition Chinese Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang. Ma and Siew are to be sworn in May 20. After receiving the election certificate, Ma vowed to make good on his election promises and revitalize Taiwan's sagging economy. 'The election certificate is light, but responsibilities on our shoulders are heavy,' he said. 'I hope all of us will roll up our sleeves so that after May 20, we can turn our election pledges into reality.' Ma faces the daunting tasks of improving ties with China, rebuilding trust with the United States, seeking to sign free trade agreements with counties that do not have diplomatic ties with Taiwan and bringing about a resurgence in the economy.
