Husband a hero in crocodile attack
Apr 3, 2008, 4:56 GMT
Sydney - An Australian jumped on the back of a crocodile that attacked his wife and prised its jaws open to free her leg from its grip, news reports said Thursday.
The 36-year-old woman received puncture wounds in Wednesday's attack at a popular tourist haunt in the Litchfield National Park, about 160 kilometres south of Darwin, the Northern Territory capital.
The local couple was visiting from Darwin and having a sunset swim when the crocodile attacked the woman.
'A crocodile grabbed the woman, and her husband jumped on the back of the animal in an attempt to free her,' a police spokeswoman told national broadcaster ABC. 'The animal released the woman and swam into a concrete culvert.'
Park rangers said they were shocked by the attack because the area was believed to be crocodile-free and is very popular with tourists.
