Myanmar accepts Japanese relief workers

May 20, 2008, 11:08 GMT

Tokyo (dpa) - Myanmar's military junta on Tuesday granted relief workers from Japan permission to enter the country to help victims of Cyclone Nargis, the Kyodo News agency reported.

Myanmar's ambassador to Japan confirmed the relief team would be allowed into Myanmar at a meeting in Tokyo with Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura.

The permission came after the junta had come under international condemnation for refusing to grant visas to international aid workers to help about 2.4 million affected by Nargis.

The storm struck May 2-3, leaving 133,650 people dead or missing, according to government estimates.
