US Secretary of State Rice visits quake-hit areas in China
Jun 29, 2008, 10:54 GMT
Beijing - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Sunday began a two-day tour of China, where she first visited the country's earthquake-hit Sichuan province.
According to the Xinhua news agency, Rice expressed her sympathy in the name of all US citizens to the victims of the May 12 earthquake.
At least 70,000 people were killed in the massive earthquake, which measured 8 on the Richter scale.
Rice also said the US government was happy that the Chinese government and people in the midst of the disaster turned to the international community for help.
As opposed to the military junta in Myanmar (Burma) after the destruction visited upon that country by cyclone Nargis, the Chinese leadership accepted help promptly after the earthquake.
