New Zealand woman makes record breathless swim
Aug 10, 2008, 22:08 GMT
Wellington - New Zealander Kathryn McPhee, 29, has set a new world record by swimming 151 metres underwater on a single breath - six lengths of the pool plus one turn - a newspaper reported on Monday.
McPhee, a Wellington architect, who was underwater for 2 minutes 48 seconds in the national freediving championships on Saturday, beat the previous record held by Russian Natalia Molchanova by 2-metres, the Dominion Post reported.
Competitors in freediving, also known as breath-hold or apnoea diving, use no breathing apparatus. The world championships will be held in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, next month.
