Australian alarm as petty crime goes global
Aug 25, 2008, 1:45 GMT
Sydney - Teams of professional pickpockets from as far away as Brazil are arriving in Australia on fly-in fly-out missions that last just a couple of weeks, news reports said Monday.
The theft sprees are organized by a local crime boss who takes a percentage of the loot, a police spokesman told The Sydney Morning Herald.
The teams arrive on tourist visas and are often gone before police have collected evidence and studied closed-circuit television footage that could help with convictions.
Making detection even harder, the pickpockets move from city to city before making their getaways by jet plane.
