China confirms two more police stabbed to death in restive region
Aug 29, 2008, 9:29 GMT
Beijing - China on Friday confirmed that two police officers were stabbed to death and five others were injured during the latest in a series of attacks in the restive Central Asian region of Xinjiang.
The officers were 'investigating a previous case' when they were ambushed by attackers who were hiding in a cornfield on Wednesday night in Xinjiang's Jiashi county, the official Xinhua news agency quoted a police spokesman as saying.
Police were investigating the attack, the agency said without giving any further details.
The German-based World Uighur Congress reported the deaths on Thursday and said at least 20 people were arrested following the attack in Jiashi, which is about 100 kilometres east of China's westernmost city of Kashgar.
The group said earlier this week that Chinese police had detained 500 Uighurs in the Xinjiang region over the past two weeks. More than 100 people were also arrested in Kashgar after an August 4 attack that killed 16 paramilitary officers in the city, it added.
The August 4 attack, which China said was carried out by two Uighur men, was among a string of deadly assaults carried out against government, police and security personnel in Xinjiang before and during this month's Beijing Olympic Games.
At least 26 people were killed in a 10-day period.
Human rights groups have criticized China for not making a distinction between violent terrorists and Uighurs expressing peaceful dissent, including those who favour independence, which they said should not be a crime.
The Uighur group said earlier that about 90 people were arrested after a series of bombings in Kuqa county on August 10. Ten 'terrorists' were killed by police bullets or their own bombs, the government said.

This is the work of Al Qaeda . Uyghurs pretense of peaceful struggle has reared its beastly intentions when Al Qaeda made an open threat to harm Chinese. With the help from Americans Indian and Japanese who are jealous of China and also are boot lickers Chinese helping them. Indians thinking that they have American support to win in a conflict with China will be sorely disappointed when Americans back out. The Indians press seemed so gleeful in reporting the Al Qaeda threat.

The Turkish descendants can walk their behinds back to Turkey if they don't like it in CHINA.
I will be one of many Han CHINESE waving them 'Zai Jian' on their trip back to Turkey.
The fact is these lazy people have it too good in CHINA, and are not willing to leave. They like to ride the coat tails of CHINA's economic boom and enjoy its fruits. These remnants of Ottomans are on CHINESE land and if they break CHINESE laws they must be caught and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
And CHINA must repay Turkey for its deeds. We CHINESE must support overtly and covertly in every way the PKK for an independent Turkish Kurdistan.
CHINA must break off all ties with Turkey and work closer with Greece and Greek Cypriots.
We MUST hold that little country Turkey responsible for the attacks by the Uighurs. Therefore we MUST repay that little country for its disrespect.
The Uighurs that believe in CHINA and are for CHINA, of course are our brothers. Those that have turned against the motherland will be dealt with.
Overseas CHINESE will involve themselves with this 'Uighur' issue and take care of the problem ones.
