David Beckham's LA Galaxy to play in New Zealand
Sep 2, 2008, 4:54 GMT
Wellington - English footballing star David Beckham's LA Galaxy club is to play an exhibition game against an Oceania All Stars invitational team in Auckland on December 6, regional authorities announced Tuesday.
Former French international Christian Karembeu, 37, who was born in France's Pacific territory of New Caledonia, will captain the Oceania side, the Auckland Regional Council said.
It will be a return to New Zealand for Beckham, who scored for LA Galaxy when it beat Wellington's Phoenix 4-1 in December after the American side played Sydney FC in Australia on an exhibition tour down under.
Karembeu retired from full-time football in 2005 after a career in which he played 53 times for France, including as a member of the squad that won the World Cup in 1998.
The Oceania team will be assembled from member associations across the Pacific region, Oceania Football Confederation general secretary Tai Nicholas said.
He said the OFC hoped to include three international players from outside the Oceania region.
