Sep 4, 2008, 11:56 GMT
Beijing - A gas explosion killed 27 people and injured six at a coal mine in north-eastern China's Liaoning province on Thursday, state media said.
Rescuers recovered the bodies of four missing miners at the Number 8 Coal Mine in the Qinghemen district of Liaoning's Fuxin city in the afternoon, following the explosion on Thursday morning, the semi-official China News Service said.
A total of 41 miners were working underground at the time of the explosion and 14 escaped, six of them with injuries, the agency said.
The cause of the explosion was under investigation, it said.
The Number 8 Coal Mine opened in 1996 and had a licensed capacity to produce up to 40,000 tons of coal this year, the State Administration of Work Safety said on its website.
Accidents kill an estimated 10,000 people annually in Chinese mines. The accidents are often triggered by outdated equipment and poor safety measures, with many occurring at illegal mines.
