Dec 22, 2008, 3:40 GMT
Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian wildlife officers foiled an attempt to smuggle out more than 600 protected clouded monitor lizards, a news report said Monday.
Acting on a tip-off, officers from the wildlife department launched a raid at the cargo terminal of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Thursday and seized the monitor lizards which were declared as fish, the News Straits Times daily reported.
A local man in his 60s was arrested in a house in the capital Kuala Lumpur on Friday in a follow-up operation.
The wildlife officers also found several monitor lizards, python meat and skins and fox meat at the premises.
The suspect would be held in remand for investigations until Tuesday, and if found guilty of smuggling, face a fine of 21,000 ringgit (6,176 dollars) and 18 years' jail.
