Philippines to dispatch additional peacekeepers to Darfur

May 12, 2009, 8:24 GMT

Manila - The Philippines will send an additional contingent of police officers to help in the peacekeeping mission in Darfur, officials said Tuesday.

The 94 police officers will leave in two groups starting on May 13, according to police spokesman Chief Superintendent Nicanor Bartolome.

The police contingent was the second to be dispatched to Darfur, where some 100 officers had been assigned to the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operations since 2008.

Police deputy chief for administration Geary Barias said he was confident that the contingent would help 'effect change, bring peace and stability and be a positive influence' in Darfur.

'As you go on this mission, remember that you represent the Philippine National Police and as such, I implore you to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and conduct,' he added.

Aside from the peacekeepers in Darfur, there are also more than 400 police officers in various UN peacekeeping missions in Liberia, Afghanistan, Haiti, Sudan, Georgia and East Timor.
