Taiwan woman indicted for making 11,551 harassment phone calls

Taipei - A Taiwan woman has been indicted for making 11,551 phone calls to another woman whom she suspected was trying to seduce her boyfriend, the online newspaper Nownews.com said Tuesday. A prosecutor in Yunlin County, west Taiwan, sought 14 months' jail for the woman, identified only by her surname Huang, on charges of disrupting social order. According to Nownews.com, Huang, 32, a divorcee, fell in love with a night-school student, but found out that her boyfriend was friendly with Chiu, a married young woman who also attended the school. Believing that Chiu was trying to seduce her boyfriend, Huang began to make calls to Chiu's cell and home phones as well as her husband's cell phone. During five months in 2008, from June to November, Huang made a total of 11,551 phone calls, hiding her caller ID. The calls were made both day and night, with Huang remaining silent when someone picked up the phone. She made as many as 200 phone calls a day, the average being 77 calls a day, or 3.2 calls per hour. 'I had a nervous breakdown and panicked whenever the phone rang,' Nownews.com quoted Chiu as saying. Chiu reported the harassment the police who traced the calls to Huang.
