UN: Severe lack of funding for Myanmar shelters a year after Nargis

Geneva - The United Nations top humanitarian in Myanmar warned Tuesday that providing adequate shelter remained a serious problem in the country following last year's cyclone Nargis.
About 500,000 people are in extremely vulnerable shelters that may not survive the upcoming monsoon season, Bishow Parajuli warned in a report on progress in Myanmar after the devastating cyclone.
While overall the UN's appeal for the country has met a fair response, Parajuli told reporters in Geneva, about 10 million dollars for shelter was urgently needed.
His report said part of the problem was a lack of sufficient aid organizations capable of carrying out the work.
Meanwhile, he said the process of receiving visas for aid workers was slowing down, possibly indicating a change in policy.
Immediately following the cyclone, the military government had prevented aid workers from getting into the country, but eventually relaxed its objections and opened up the door to many humanitarians.
