Australian soldiers on the porky side
May 20, 2009, 6:28 GMT
Sydney - More than half of Australia's Defence Force personnel do not fit the recruitment poster images of lean, mean fighting machines, figures released Wednesday showed.
Sixty-two per cent of the 52,000 in uniform are either overweight or obese, the same proportion as in the general population.
Earlier this year, the Defence Force chief medical officer, Major General Paul Alexander, admitted that weight was indeed a problem in the ranks.
