Hong Kong housewife loses appeal for branding maid with iron

May 22, 2009, 4:12 GMT

Hong Kong - A Hong Kong housewife was behind bars Friday after losing her appeal against a seven-month jail term for branding the arm of her Indonesian maid with an iron.

Ng Bik-man, 32, attacked her 24-year-old maid Rasnenti in August after accusing her of letting Ng's 8-month-old son get too close to the hot iron while he was moving about in his baby walker.

She at first threatened to burn the maid's face with the iron as punishment but then branded her arm with it, leaving her with serious burns, a court heard in January.

The mother of two was convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm but appealed her conviction and seven-month jail term at a hearing Thursday in Hong Kong's Court of Appeal.

The appeal was rejected after Justice Peter Line said there was 'no doubt' how the injury to Rasnenti happened and that prosecutors had a strong case against Ng.

More than 200,000 women from the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand work as live-in domestic helpers for Hong Kong families, earning a government-set minimum wage of around 450 US dollars a month.

As an HK resident, I find this a good sentence. Let is remember though that most maids are well treated in HK though.
