Taiwan to help Belize become a rice-exporting country
May 31, 2009, 14:36 GMT
Taipei - Taiwan, in line with its plan to aid its 23 diplomatic allies, has agreed to help the Caribbean island of Belize become a rice-exporting nation, the China Times newspaper reported Sunday.
Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou made the promise during talks with Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow before leaving Belize for Guatemala Friday.
Taiwan is already helping Belize grow rice, and in talks with Barrow, Ma pledged to help Belize become self-sufficient in rice production in the short term, with rice export as an eventual goal.
Ma is also to visit El Salvador to attend president-elect Mauricio Funes' inauguration on Monday, the China Times said.

Belize has been producing enough rice to feed itself for several years now. The goal is to increase production to become a major exporter. And we are a Central American nation-state, not an island.

The writer refered to Belize as a Caribbean island.
