Filipino maid charged with murdering Hong Kong boss
Jun 13, 2009, 5:08 GMT
Hong Kong - A Filipino maid appeared in a Hong Kong court Saturday charged with the brutal slaying of her employer.
The 35-year-old entered no plea to the charge of murdering Janice Kei, 47, a senior project manager with the city's Architectural Services Department.
Kei was found dead in the living room of her luxury Happy Valley apartment early Thursday by police who had been called to the scene after neighbours heard screaming.
She had multiple wounds which had almost severed her head and her stomach had been hacked open. A blood-stained meat cleaver was found close by.
Since her arrest, the maid has been detained at a psychiatric hospital. News reports in the local media said doctors have declared her mentally ill. She was remanded in custody for two weeks.
The accused is believed to have worked for Kei for around three months.
More than 200,000 women, mostly from the Philippines and Indonesia, work as live-in maids for Hong Kong families, earning a government-set minimum wage of around 450 US dollars a month.
